What often gets lost in the story line here is that, although Christ's work is “finished,” He is still (continuing a work, by His Spirit) IN us ...in the earth; hence the “gifts,” whereby we might be fruitful in every good work.

Jesus did say we could do nothing without Him; which accounts for the necessary relationship, with the Father and the Son, already foreordained. [Jn 15:5; 17:21]
